ASIAGO AT THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE STRESA CONVENTION
On 1 June Asiago cheese took part in the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the signing of the “International Convention on the Use of Appellations of Origin and Denominations of Cheese”, better known as the “Stresa Convention”. The event, sponsored by AFIDOP, was held at the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées in Stresa and saw the participation of the associations of producers of Italian and foreign cheeses, delegates of the signatory countries and the highest authorities of the governments and parliaments of Italy and the EU.
The Convention, ratified on 1 June 1951 by Italy, Austria, Denmark, France, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, paved the way for and was an important milestone in the issuing of Italian and EU regulations to protect and promote cheese. It also signalled the beginning of a more far-reaching process which culminated in EEC regulation no. 2081/92 regarding all PDO and PGI agricultural products and foodstuffs.
